About Michelle

website portraitWelcome to my site! I’m Michelle Phelps, and I teach piano lessons in Oakland, California, specializing in beginning and intermediate students of all ages. I’ve been teaching for 16 years, helping my students play their favorite music, write their own songs, read and write music, and develop their technique, voice, musicianship, and style. Most importantly, I teach my students how to speak the language of music, with the goal of equipping and empowering them to tackle new material on their own for the rest of their lives.

When I was five years old, I used to sit with my friend who lived across the street while she practiced piano, and wonder how she knew which keys to press and how she could make any sense out of all those dots on the page. It seemed so magical to me–and still does. From the time I knew what a piano was, I wanted one and yearned to play. My musical journey has been long and circuitous, but has also been one of the few absolute constants in my life. My passion, enthusiasm, and commitment have never waned.

I bring all of that passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to teaching. It’s an honor to accompany and guide my students on their own musical journey, and it brings me tremendous joy and satisfaction. I absolutely love my job. I am truly and deeply blessed.

Thanks for stopping by! Don’t hesitate to email me with any questions you have or to inquire about lesson availability. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Happy playing!
